1970's Sphinx A150 Victorian Style Enamel and Seed Mourning Style Brooch

Here is a very popular design from the mid-1970s - a beautiful example from the Sphinx range, this is a small brooch in gold-plated metal, with a black centre adorned with an etched gold star and a ring of faux pearls all round the edge.

This measures 2.6cms in diameter, with a rise of about 1.5cms in the middle and has a secure roll-over clasp on the back. It also carries a rectangular cartouche with the design serial no. A150 embossed on it, very much in the Sphinx style. No Sphinx signature cartouche on this one, but they didn't always sign everything. It has the same snowflake-like design on the front as other signed pieces in the range.

Sphinx originally brought out a whole range of these designs based on Victorian mourning jewellery - this was a particular style popular from the mid-1860s onwards, after Prince Albert's death in 1861.

The central faux pearl at the heart of the star is missing and this is reflected in the price. Still a very pretty thing
