Antique Ironstone Bynol Allen and Hanbury’s Malt & Oil Advertising Jar

Victorian white ironstone English advertising pot for Allen & Hanbury’s Malt & Oil Bynol restorative treatment.

Dating from around 1900, these earlier versions of the Bynol pots are more difficult to source and feature black underglaze transfer print around the outside of the pot.

A preparation of malt extract and cod liver oil, the pot gives an indication of the benefits of taking this supplement to help digestion and “...forming a most valuable nutrient and restorative."

The pot is a wonderful example of Victorian typography, with the different sections all featuring different styles of typography. The front features a decorative background with barley. One side of the pot includes detailed directions for taking the malt and oil extract, plus gives quotes from The Lancet and The British Medical Journal about its virtues. The other side discusses the overall benefits to health the extract can have.

As most jars were discarded with common waste at the time, and have been more recently been dug up from Victorian dumping grounds, they often have discoloration and chips. However, this adds to their charm as highly decorative, weathered and chippy pieces.

This pot is in fair condition, it has a repaired chip and a crack to one side and a crack to the other side with repair work inside, but is otherwise very clean, with the text very clear and visible. No chips, some marks to the base
