American Dentifrice supplied by William Darling, Manchester, 1870-1910

This is a rare toothpaste pot, circa 1880. Made in England to the specifications of Dr. C.R.Coffin, D.D.S, Baltimore College of Dental Surgery.
It once contained Toothpaste according to the Dentist's compounds, one of the early varieties of toothpaste used in America and produced for him in England. Tooth cleaning first become a hygenic standard in 18th century England and then in America, primarily for the upper classes, and was accomplished with a variety of strange tools. Tooth paste began appearing in the 19th century, and was marketed in these beautiful pots beginning in the 1880s, when nearly every chemist, dentist or pharmacist began formulating his own recipe and printing their own pots for advertising. The pot lid and base was made in the Staffordshire district and is transfer printed in black.

This lovely old vessel has been saved from a Victorian dump. Fantastic old typography on the lid

Measuring a little under 2 inches tall with a 3 1/2 inch diameter, this pot and lid are very collectible

See the photos for details of the cracks and crazing and imperfections as you would expect from an item from the Victorian era which has been buried for a while!

Perfect for display, and useful for trinkets, I just love them!
