Vintage No 1120 Rabone boxwood and brass folding 2 foot rule

Very collectible... A beautifully made vintage ruler of boxwood with brass hinges and ends. This is in fair condition for its age with a lovely patina to the wood and the brass (which I have left unpolished). The impressed black numerals remain fairly clear and are marked in inches.

The ruler is 6.5 inches when folded and 24 inches when fully opened.

It is clearly stamped:
J Rabone & Sons, Birmingham, Warrnd, Best Boxd No 1120

Rulers, also known as rules, began as an attempt to standardise measurements based on the human anatomy, such as the foot and the hand. By the 17th century, rulers were marked in inches, with smaller, fractional lengths coming later. From the start, the impracticality of very long rulers was obvious, so carpenters and tool makers alike devised ways to fold their wooden rulers so the tool would be easy to store and move from job to job. The boxwood rules produced by John Rabone & Sons (est. 1784) were renowned for their excellent design and quality of manufacture.

This ruler would make a perfect vintage gift for yourself or a collector. Although warped, it is still usable and will outlast any modern reproduction. So much better than plastic!
